WORKSHOP I: Light Footprint: How Much Do We Weigh on the Environment?

On 31 March 2026, Workshop No. 1 was held within the framework of the project Waste Wise: Enhancing Governance for Sustainable Waste Management, entitled "Light Footprint: How Much Do We Weigh on the Environment?".

The workshop was organized with the aim of increasing participants' awareness of the environmental impact of everyday habits and promoting more sustainable lifestyles. The programme introduced the concept of the ecological footprint and explored how individual choices related to food consumption, housing, transport, consumption patterns and waste generation affect the environment. Particular attention was also devoted to environmental legislation in Sicily, waste management challenges, separate waste collection systems and the role of local authorities in promoting sustainable waste management practices.

The workshop included an interactive activity based on the calculation of participants' ecological footprints, enabling them to better understand the relationship between personal behaviour, resource consumption, waste production and greenhouse gas emissions. Through practical examples and discussion, participants reflected on opportunities to reduce their environmental impact and adopt more sustainable everyday practices.

The workshop was attended by 12 participants representing universities, environmental organizations, local associations and the wider public. Participants gained valuable knowledge on environmental sustainability, ecological footprint assessment and responsible waste management, which can be applied both in their professional activities and daily lives.
